1 - Tone Development

1.0 Intro to Tone Development (& Long Tones)

Every practice session starts with long tones. Watch this video to learn why long tones are the most important part of your practice system!

1.1 Mouthpiece Pitch Exercise

How can you tell if you're using the correct amount of pressure with your embouchure? Simple - use this easy mouthpiece exercise.You might be surprised at the results!

1.2 Intonation

Many saxophone players falsely believe that playing in tune is simply a matter of minimizing movement with our embouchure whilst playing the saxophone.However, in order to play in tune, our throat and embouchure must constantly adjust throughout the range of the saxophone in order to 'iron out' the natural variations in intonation that occur on every instrument.

1.3 Vibrato

Vibrato can be as unique and deeply personal to a saxophone player as tone can be. Certain genres might demand very specific approaches to vibrato, however in most cases (at least, in the jazz world), players are free to explore different approaches to vibrato and develop their own personal style. In this lesson, you'll learn more about the history and practical applications of the vibrato technique!

1.4 Scoops

Scoops are a bluesy, evocative technique used throughout jazz and blues music. They're also one of the most fun to play!In this video, you'll learn how to use the scooping technique to great effect - as well as a caution on overusing it.

1.5 Subtone

Subtone - the warm, wooly sound you'll hear on tender ballads by the likes of Lester Young, Lee Konitz and Joe Lovano - is a unique technique on the saxophone that involves changing the shape of our embouchure and slowing down our airstream.If executed correctly, it provides a beautiful contrast to the more powerful 'full tone' we're used to, and opens up the ability to play very low notes at a whisper quiet volume. 1.6 Fall-offs

Fall-offs (sometimes just referred to as 'falls') are another technique used by instrumentalists in the jazz and blues genres. This technique is as much about rapid timing of our fingers, as it is about embouchure and breath control.Falls can be fast or short, and are often used in ensemble playing - particularly in big band music.

1.7 Growls

You can thinking of growling on the saxophone as having our very own distortion pedal - without the need for any electronics! Listen out for players such as Junior Walker, Ben Webster, Maceo Parker and Dave Sanborn for some great examples of growling in a wide range of genres.In this video, you'll learn 2 distinct pathways (that can be combined if desired) to achieve a spine-tingling growl sound. Dive in and have fun!

1.8 Overtones

Practicing our overtones deepens our understanding of how the saxophone works, lays the groundwork for the altissimo range, and enhances our tonal control on the saxophone.Whilst a lot of players mistake playing overtones for simply adjusting lip pressure, in practice overtones also involve a technique known as 'voicing' - changing the shape of our throat and oral cavity. This can be achieved through singing a note, focussing on a particular vowel sound, or both.

1.9 Altissimo

Unlocking the saxophone's full potential involves exploring the very highest range of the saxophone - our altissimo range! Whilst playing altissimo can present a considerable challenge, by practicing the techniques introduced in the previous units (overtones, in particular) we can set ourselves up for a smooth transition into the altissimo range.

2 - Scales

2.0 Introduction to Scales

2.1 Chromatic Scale

Mastering the chromatic scale is the best way to jump-start your way into Supercharged Saxophone!

2.2 Major Scales

The major scales form the basis of practically every other scale you will learn on the saxophone - so it's safe to say they're very, very important. Take your time with your major scales and arpeggios, and only move on when you're comfortable with all 12 keys.

2.3 Major Pentatonic Scales

Major pentatonic scales are used liberally in pop and R&B music, and can be used in virtually every other genre too! If you're already comfortable with your major scales, your major pentatonics should come along quite quickly.

2.4 Natural Minor Scales

Not every piece of music you play will be in a major key. In fact, some of the most beautiful, poignant music is written in minor keys! This is where your natural minor scales come in.

Once again, knowledge of your major scales will ensure these scales feel natural under your fingers.

2.5 Minor Pentatonics & Blues Scales

The minor pentatonic and blues scales are closely related to each other - in fact, they're only separated by a single note! Both scales form part of the essential toolkit for anyone improvising in the jazz, blues, R&B and pop world.

2.6 Harmonic Minors

One of the coolest and most 'exotic' sounding scales - the harmonic minor is an important scale to learn when improvising on minor keys. Listen out for the final 3 notes - the b6, major 7th, and 1 - this is where the tension is built and released!

2.7 Modes of the Major Scale

Uh-oh, I'm sitting at the piano - something must be terribly wrong! (Just kidding...)

In this lesson, I'm going to unpack some harmonic concepts that will help you understand basic chord progressions, as well as introduce a variety of new scales that will keep you busy after this course is complete!

3 - Technical Exercises

3.0 Introduction to Technical Exercises

This video provides an introduction to the Technical Exercises chapter of Supercharged Saxophone, and how to get the most out of these exercises.

3.1 LH / RH Break; Slurs & Staccatos

Make sure to double check the key signature for each exercise – it carries through for the entire line!

Slurs are marked by an arc written directly above or below the noteheads. These slurred notes (apart from the first note in the slur grouping) are not tongued.
Staccato markings (meaning ‘detached’) are written as a dot ( . ) above or below the noteheads.

3.2 Octave Break; Accents & Tenutos

The octave break is a difficult transition on the saxophone. Make sure to keep your thumb on the thumbrest the entire time and simply rock it forward to press your octave key.
An accent is written as a ( > ) marking and is a weightier note than a standard tongued note.

Tenuto markings (written as a line ( - ) above or below the notehead) are lighter and longer than a standard tongued note.

3.3 Jazz Phrasing & Swing

Swing consists of two major components:

1) An emphasis on the off-beats and
2) A triplet subdivision

Without altering the rhythm of a phrase at all, if we simply emphasize the off beats using a technique called ‘back-tonguing’, the phrase will already start to swing!

If we then go one step further and add a triplet subdivision, the swing becomes ‘deeper’ and more pronounced. Generally, slower phrases resemble this ‘triplet swing’ more than faster phrases, which tend to straighten out naturally with higher tempos.

In the left-hand column of these exercises, you’ll see phrases with only the back-tonguing technique applied. The right-hand column combines back-tonguing with the triplet subdivision, to create a hard swinging phrase.

3.4 Side C, Retaining G# key. Chromatic F# key, Marcatos

Exercises 35 - 38 are to be played with the side C fingering. The side C fingering alleviates the messy transition between the normal B and C fingerings, and is the preferred fingering when moving between these two notes specifically.

Exercises 39 - 42 can be played be retaining the G# fingering for all notes below the G#. By doing this, we can ‘pre-load’ the G# fingering so it’s already there when we need it!

Exercises 43 - 46 are to be played using the chromatic F# fingering. This key works just like the side C fingering, in that it’s perfect for chromatic passages. These exercises also introduce the marcato marking ( ^ ). It’s a heavy, punchy accent that’s achieved with the tongue and airstream.

Exercises 39 - 42 can be played be retaining the G# fingering for all notes below the G#. By doing this, we can ‘pre-load’ the G# fingering so it’s already there when we need it!

3.5 Bb Fingerings - Bis Key and Side Bb

There are 2 primary fingerings for Bb – the side Bb key, and the bis key.

For exercises 47 - 50 – use your side Bb key.
For exercises 51 - 54 – use your bis key.

3.6 Palm Keys & Front F Fingerings

The front F fingerings are a fantastic precursor to the altissimo range, in part because they ‘feel’ different to play than their palm key counterparts.

The palm keys on the other hand, are slightly easier to play precisely and generally play with a 'purer' tone.

Both fingerings are important to know as an advanced level saxophonist, so take your time with these exercises and be sure to practice with a tuner!

3.7 Low Range & Rollers

Our pinky fingers are responsible for a surprising amount of notes on the saxophone. in fact, our lefthand pinky finger even gets a whole table to itself!

The rollers make using our pinky fingers easier and smoother, eliminating pesky ghost notes created from taking our finger off a key to move to its neighbour.

Exercises 87 – 94 have been specifically chosen to work out our pinky fingers to the max, and also maximise the use of the rollers.

As always, take your time with these exercises and be sure to practice with a metronome.

4 - Songs

4.0 Introduction to Songs Chapter

Learn more about the Songs chapter, and how to get the most out of each and every tune!

4.1 Blues For Emma

A fun medium blues that focusses on:

- Triplet swing

- Backtonguing

- Blues scale

- Improvisational 'constraints'

4.2 Golden Feels

Based on 'Fields of Gold' by Sting. A great pop ballad to focus on:

- Grace notes & turns

- Pentatonic improvisation

- Phrasing and 'telling a story'

4.3 Blues for Harvey

A medium-slow blues that reinforces rhythmic placement and swing.

Extra areas of focus:

- Accents

- 'Dressing up' a single note

- Falls / doits

- Establishing motifs during improvisation

4.4 Expressions

Based on 'Impressions' by John Coltrane. An exploration into modal improvisation!

Extra areas of focus:

- Backtonguing

- Modal improvisation

- Scoops (ala 'Coltrane')

- Alternate scales for improvisation

4.5 Bert's Blues

A slow blues to challenge your rhythmic mastery and command over the blues form!

Extra areas of focus:

- Scoops

- Falloffs

- Grace notes

- Navigating slow tempos

- Revisiting blues scale

- 'Changing gears'

4.6 Bake Anything You Want

Based on 'Shake Everything You Got' by Maceo Parker / The JB's. A funky, R&B explosion!

- Call & response patterns

- Alternate scale choices

4.7 Brew Bossa

Based on 'Blue Bossa', the jazz bossa-nova standard by Kenny Dorham.

4.8 Pass The Cheese

Based on 'Pass The Peas' by Maceo Parker. A return to the funk / R&B world of James Brown!

4.9 Take The B Train

Based on 'Take The A Train' by Billy Strayhorn / Duke Ellington Orchestra. One of the most well-known jazz standards of all time!

- Subtone

- Jazz articulation

- Soloing over AABA form

4.10 Sunshine

Based on 'Sunny' by Bobby Hebb - a soul-jazz classic. Famously re-recorded in the 1970's by Boney M. to great commercial success.

- Styleizing a pop melody with turns, scoops and glissandi

- Motific improvisation

4.11 Hot Duck Time

Based on 'Cold Duck Time' by Eddie Harris - another famous soul-jazz classic. Listen to it on Swiss Movement by Les McCann and Eddie Harris.

- Finding anchor points in 16th subdivisions

4.12 Toledo

Based on 'Perdido' by the great trombonist Juan Tizol. A dive into advanced improvisational approaches.
